VIOLENT REPEAT OFFENDER GETS 30 YEARS FOR ATTEMPTING TO MURDER HIS GIRLFRIEND

Married man shoots girlfriend, drives her to the hospital and flees

UPPER MARLBORO, MD – Today, 41-year old Corey Balam of Capitol Heights was sentenced to serve 60 years in prison, with all but 30 suspended, for shooting his girlfriend in the head. In November 2019, Balam pled guilty to attempted second degree murder, second degree assault and use of a firearm in a crime of violence in a plea agreement. On October 23, 2018, Balam became enraged and began punching his girlfriend in the face after a disagreement. He then dragged her into a closet, put a pillow over her head and shot her in the back of her head. The victim survived.

“We have an excellent team of attorneys in our Special Victims and Family Violence Unit and I am pleased with the results in this case. I am also grateful that our victim not only survived, but had the courage to come forward and stay the course during the prosecution of her abuser. Mr. Balam has been in and out of prison with decades of increased violence against women in multiple jurisdictions. He will no longer be in a position to harm women,” said State’s Attorney Braveboy.

As part of the sentence handed down today, upon release, Balam will be on supervised probation for five years and must register on the gun registry.
