Defendant lures victim with car registered to estranged wife and later shoots her to death
UPPER MARLBORO, MD (January 27, 2023) – Earlier this week, 46-year-old Charles Edward Kelly was found guilty of killing his ex-girlfriend in October 2019. After a week-long trial and less than 3 hours of deliberation, a Prince George’s County jury convicted the defendant of first-degree murder, use of a handgun in the commission of a violent crime and related gun charges. Kelly is facing a potential maximum sentence of life in prison and is scheduled to be sentenced on April 5, 2023.
On October 15, 2019, Prince George's County police officers responded to the 1000 block of 56th Avenue in Fairmount Heights, where they found Brianna Green (age 20) in the driver’s seat of a Lexus ES300 suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. After emergency personnel arrived, the victim was pronounced dead.
A registration check of the vehicle where the victim was found, established that both vehicles, driven by the victim and the suspect, were registered to the shooter’s estranged wife. Investigators also learned that the defendant and the victim were in a two-year relationship but were no longer together at the time of the shooting. Ultimately, the investigation established Kelly as the suspected shooter.
"I am grateful that justice has been served in this case. Brianna Green was a young woman with a bright future, and she deserved to be with us today. I want to commend the prosecutors who tried this case for their commitment and diligence in achieving justice for the family and loved ones of Brianna. I am very pleased with this guilty verdict and the fact that we were able to hold Mr. Kelly accountable for committing this murder,” said State’s Attorney Braveboy.
