UPPER MARLBORO, MD (February 15, 2023) – Marcus Mitchell, of Hyattsville, has been found guilty of second degree murder and use of a firearm during a crime of violence for a shooting that occurred in February 2022. The jury rendered the verdict after a seven-day trial and four hours of deliberation. Mitchell, 32, is facing a potential maximum sentence of 60 years in prison.

On February 3, 2022, Mitchell drove Remi Howell, 29, to the parking lot of Parkview Baptist Church in Landover and shot her multiple times. Howell’s body was found two days later by the edge of the church parking lot.

The investigation revealed that Mitchell returned to the scene of the crime five times to make sure that Howell was dead. Further investigation and witness interviews established that Mitchell and Howell may have been in a romantic relationship. Furthermore, the murder weapon, along with clothing worn by the defendant identified in surveillance video which recorded the murder, was found in the defendant’s home.

“This is a very sad case in which a young woman was shot multiple times and killed. The defendant clearly has no regard for human life, and I am grateful that my office is able to hold Mr. Mitchell accountable for his horrible actions,” said State’s Attorney Braveboy. “I want to thank the attorneys on this case for the hard work they put into securing justice for our victim. My heart continues to be with the family during this very difficult time.”
