Bowie Police Officer Indicted For Misconduct in Office

UPPER MARLBORO, MD – Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Aisha Braveboy announced today that Lieutenant Ernest Stanley, a Bowie City police officer, has been indicted for misconduct in office.

"Police officers are sworn to operate with the highest degree of professionalism and integrity and to protect the public,” Braveboy said. “By firing his weapon at a fleeing vehicle when there was no imminent threat, we believe this officer put the occupants of the vehicle and members of the community in danger.”

On August 8, 2018, Lt. Stanley made a traffic stop on a vehicle with two occupants while in uniform. The driver accelerated and fled the scene. At that time, Lt. Stanley fired three rounds of his service issued firearm, striking the vehicle once.

At the time of the shooting, neither occupants posed an imminent threat to the officer or the community.

An indictment contains allegations that a defendant has committed a crime. Every defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
