Homicide Unit
The Office of the State's Attorney for Prince George's County
The Homicide Unit is responsible for investigating, charging, and presenting all homicides that occur in the county at trial. As part of the investigation, homicide unit attorneys work closely with detectives from all agencies from the moment of the homicide to ensure that the case is thoroughly investigated and that all legal means are used to conclude what occurred and, where appropriate, charge a defendant or defendants properly to insure that justice is served.
In addition, the attorneys in the unit assist the Prince George’s County police detectives and municipal police departments in the county with investigating all suspicious deaths by providing legal support and advice, reviewing evidence, and interviewing witnesses. Homicide prosecutions are complex and emotional cases often involving expert scientific evidence and testimony and difficult legal issues.
Due to their complexity and the need to thoroughly investigate and protect the public safety, some homicide cases can take several years. The homicide unit is dedicated to ensuring that justice is served and that the victims and families of victims are given a voice and involved in the process to the extent allowed by law.
